Cannatella Grocery was established in 1923 by Charles Cannatella and his father Joseph in Melville, Louisiana. The family lived in the house next to the store, and as Aunt Jennie wrote in the family history:
“For us the store played a vital part in our lives. It seemed to have a spirit of its own. Papa was always there. Grandpa, too, was always there and he played with us teaching us how to play the slot machines. There were times when there were dangerous hurricanes. Papa opened the store – even through the night – to those who sought protection from the storm. He gave out bread and salami for sandwiches."
Today the store in Melville is run by brothers Grant and Brian Cannatella, the fourth generation to run the family business. The store still plays a central role in the family, Grant and I, his wife, still live next door to the store in the family house, and the recipes are still the family recipes that have been passed down to us. We believe the memories made sharing them with others is what makes our business and our recipes special are, and we believe it is just as important to serve the community today as it was in 1923.
The store has seen some hard times throughout its 95-year history…recessions, the depression, even the great flood of 1927. When it came time to expand Cannatella Grocery outside of our hometown we decided on Mid City because like the store, Mid City has persevered and withstood the test of time. It has evolved, changed and adapted. We are looking forward to growing the next chapter of Cannatella Grocery in Mid City.
The Mid City area just felt like a good fit for us. It feels like a small community. We are excited to be a part of the Mid City community and look forward to getting to know everyone.
